PDM is seeking self-identified frontline workers to participate in "Postcards From the Front"
To Our Friends on the Front:
Thank you for all you are doing during these astonishing weeks since mid-March to keep us safe, to mend us, to feed us and to give us solace and hope. In so many ways you’ve helped us exhale into another day. We’re grateful.
Public Displays of Motion (PDM) is a company of collaborators that uses movement to illuminate the extraordinary in the everyday. We have made dance/theatre works of all kinds and within and among many communities. You can find out more about us at www.publicdisplaysofmotion.com.
As a means to mark this time in all our histories, we have conceived of a project that we’d like to invite you to join by means of simply writing a postcard length note to yourself, and submitting it in the form of written word and by video (filmed on your phone/device).
The Prompt: If you were to capture this moment in time through one memory or anecdote, what would you choose? If you had to record that memory in a postcard to send to your future self, what would you say?
You can describe what happened in the last minute or hours or day; or what you are facing in the coming moments at work, at home alone, or with family. You might consider writing to yourself key details or thoughts that you don’t want to forget. You might write to remind yourself what you want to share with your loved ones, or someone who will follow in history.
Please begin your postcard with the date, followed by “Dear [Your Name Here]”, your note, and then a sign off.
We think this is one of those exercises that is best to accomplish on spur of the moment, as you wake or as you come home from your day, or taking a break. We encourage you not to think too much, but let your spirit help you write. If you want a “buddy” from the company to help you arrange your thoughts, we can provide someone to help!
Participants are asked to share their written postcard, as well as a video recording of themselves reading their postcard aloud.
What happens to your words and image after that? PDM conceived of creating a “video postcard”, creating small dances in counterpoint to those postcards submitted by those on the front lines of the pandemic. Lindsay, our videographer, and Peter, our artistic director, will match up dances made by PDM collaborators with written or video submissions. These will be shared with the public via social media, possibly a website and other means to celebrate the work of frontline responders. A printed postcard set of our initial 20 -30 responses will be created, and gifted back to you.
You may have come to this invitation through a friend or work colleagues, Trusting a process is important. If you wish to hear Peter share more in a short video about the project click here.
By the generosity of submitting your words and/or images, you agree to let us use them for creative purposes to create “Postcards From the Front”. We guarantee that we will share with you the finished product in video form, and in limited numbers any printed postcards. Any profits from the project once expenses are covered will be donated to COVID recovery causes and artists who work with communities. To confirm your participation, please complete the form below, and a member of our team will be in touch with further instructions.
